Alpine Punch Tea Review

alpine punch_davids teaThis is the kind of tea we imagine they serve in fabulous ski chalets in the Swiss Alps. With apple, cinnamon, ginger and the heady scent of almonds, it’s warm, comforting and totally decadent. What better to sip after a long day of skiing, sledding and snowball fights? Just cozy up in front of the fire and warm up with this sweet, fortifying brew. And if a little splash of brandy makes it in there too, all the better.

aroma:

With an aroma dominated by mulled apples and warming spices, this rooibos based tea has a great sweet almond presence with just a hint of coconut. Crisp but sweet and decadent, it is a perfect blend for long winter days by the fire.

flavour:

Alpine Punch is one of my favourite teas of all time for a few reasons: First, its truly delicious and comforting. Second, it is virtually impossible to over-steep; I have completely forgotten about it for easily 20 minutes or more at points and, as long as it is still hot, it is completely drinkable.

Dominated by warming spices and a strong almond character, it reminds me of a mulled cider mixed with Amaretto. A good rooibos body provides a rich, earthy backbone for the decadent coconut and almond flavours.

Eggnog | 24 Days of Tea: Day 23

Eggnog - 24 Days of Tea Day 23We’re pretty strict about certain holiday traditions. Especially the delicious ones. So it should come as no surprise that we insist on sipping eggnog at every festive occasion. All things considered, it’s almost crazy that it took us this long to find the perfect eggnog tea. But trust us, this rich and creamy rooibos blend was definitely worth the wait. With white chocolate, mini meringues and a hint of nutmeg, it’s a brand new tradition we can’t believe we ever went without.

aroma:

The subtle aroma of this blend is full of bright green rooibos and a sweet creaminess. A hint of vanilla and nutmeg come through but the overall affect is fairly mild.

flavour:

Eggnog’s flavour is just a tad too heavily weighted in the nutmeg department for my tastes. However, the fresh green rooibos backbone is lovely and mellow with subtle white chocolate notes and a nice creaminess. Overall its not a bad blend but I have a suspicion it would be better as a latte.

And the best part is it’s made with South African rooibos, which is caffeine-free, nutty and naturally sweet. So indulge in a caramel dream. With virtually no calories, it might be the healthiest thing you do all day.

Coco Chai Rooibos | 24 Days of Tea: Day 6

Coco Chai Rooibos - 24 Days of Tea Day 6If you’re into spice-based chais, this one is for you. It’s got a smooth base of caffeine-free rooibos, and a satisfying kick of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom and piquant red peppercorns. Plus there’s a strong hint of coconut, for a slightly exotic twist. Try it straight up or infused in hot milk for a truly fabulous chai latte. It’s the kind of thing you get addicted to.

aroma:

Dominated by a strong spicy character of cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, and pepper, this tea has rich earthy notes from the rooibos base. A hint of vanilla and coconut sweetens the aroma for a fresh, inviting impression.

flavour:

The flavour is much more heavily dominated by its rooibos character with the coconut sweetness taking a more subdued role. A decent spice character lingers after sipping with a touch of vanilla also noticeable. The subtle coconut shines through more strongly at the end of the flavour and has an interesting kind of layering affect that brings it out the more you drink. I could see this tea being improved somewhat by just a touch of agave to bring out the sweetness and maybe even a splash of milk to give it the creaminess it so desperately seems to want. The recommendation for making this into a latte seems like a solid one and I intend to try that method with the rest of it.

aroma:

This lovely blend of rooibos and sencha teas features a very clean aroma full of earthy and fresh notes of lemongrass, ginger, and juniper. Hints of citrus round out the scent with notes of fresh-cut grass and just a touch of florals, making it smell like all the best parts of Spring!

flavour:

The best way to describe the flavour of this tea is fresh and clean. Definite lemongrass notes break through the base of rooibos and sencha which combine beautifully for a rich, earthy flavour. Faint citrus notes and a touch of ginger round it out and bring a lovely touch of spiciness.  A highly energizing blend, I recommend this tea for early mornings and busy days.
